    St. Lucia is an independent country in the Caribbean. It was first colonised by the French who named it after Saint Lucy of Syracuse. The country is known for its natural beauty. It’s mesmerising beaches and reef diving sites, rainforests and waterfalls attract thousands of tourists annually. St. Lucia also has many plantations which gave rise to the mixed races of the country. Like other Caribbean islands, the island has Indian, African, French and creole culture. This intermixing of different races has given rise to a unique culture.

    Banana Plantations and cocoa plantations required cheap labour. This labour was brought in by the colonial powers from different parts of the world. Today also, St. Lucia exports huge quantities of banana and coconut. Several processing units have also come up on the island. A peaceful country, St. Lucia has attracted much foreign investment lately. Most of it are in the banking and tourism sector.

    St. Lucia has invested much in improvements in roads, communications, water supply, sewerage, and port facilities which in turn have attracted foreign investment in tourism and in petroleum storage and shipping. And the diversification of an agriculture based economy is showing results. Saint Lucia has a diverse manufacturing sector, one of the most dynamic in the Eastern Caribbean area, and the government is trying to revitalise the banana industry. Despite negative growth in 2011, economic fundamentals remain solid, and GDP growth should recover in the future.

    St. Lucia has been an agrarian economy. But in the last decade or so, it has diversified into several other sectors.     Being a plantation island, the country like many of the Caribbean islands has a mixed culture. People of Indian, African and European descent have intermingled to give rise to a mixed race. The French were the first colonisers and their effect is seen throughout right from cuisine, architecture and music. Afro beats and Indian tunes add jazz to the local music and cuisine. Street food offers a mix of all. People are generally fun loving and hard working.

    Part of the Lesser Antilles, St. Lucia is an island country which in the eastern Caribbean. Blessed with natural beauty, it is a major tourist destination. Lovely beaches, dynamic music and culture, thick forest, secluded coves, beautiful waterfall….the list of attractions go on.

    Hot and sunny like the rest of the Caribbean islands, St. Lucia is a hot tourist destination. People from the continent come over to experience tropical climate. The northeast trade winds play a pivotal role in the climate of the region. The dry season begins in December and lasts till May, and the wet season falls between June and November.

    Average daytime temperatures average around 29°C while at night temperatures hover around 18°C. Seasonal variation is marginal as it is close to the equator. St. Lucia receives a good amount of rainfall throughout the year.
